The sūtra says: 'In the land of Sukhāvatī, there are seven tiers of balustrades.' Next is the explanation of the first [point], encircled below by golden balustrades. The Treatise on the Infinite Life Sūtra says: 'This is the adornment of the ground: jewel balustrades completely encircle it.' The Shuowen says: 'Lan means a barrier at a gate; shun means a wooden rail.' According to that explanation, shun is the substance that obstructs and blocks, while lan is the name for guarding and defending; this is the physical pure land. As for the ultimate land, the Avataṃsaka Sūtra says: 'A pure mind serves as the balustrade'—that is, the mind free from the three evil deeds is the substance of the shun, and the non-arising of the seven karmic actions serves as the function of the lan.
