The sūtra says: 'There are seven-jewel ponds.' Next is the explanation of the first [point], ponds glittering with the seven treasures. According to the Contemplation Sūtra, there are only eight ponds; here it must speak based on the larger and superior ones. According to the Qingjing jue jing and other texts, there are bathing ponds everywhere—either encircling the Buddha's lecture hall, or encircling the lecture halls of arhats and bodhisattvas. The Tathāgata's bathing pond is the largest, forty-eight thousand yojanas in length and breadth. After those bodhisattvas, śrāvakas, devas, humans, and others have each bathed, some chant sūtras, preach the Dharma, and sit in meditation inside the halls; others explain the Dharma, chant sūtras, and enter samādhi in the open sky; thereupon those who have not yet attained the Path all attain the Path, some attaining the first fruit, the fourth fruit, or non-retrogression. There, there are no great oceans, rivers, streams, or torrents, but only various ponds and small lotuses; the four sides of those ponds are intertwined with the seven jewels, causing the water also to display the colors of various distinct jewels.
