The sūtra says: "Filled with the water of eight good qualities." Next, this explains the second: the water contains the eight good qualities. The Praises of the Pure Land Sūtra states: (1) limpid and pure; (2) cool; (3) sweet; (4) light and soft; (5) lubricating and moistening; (6) peaceful and harmonious; (7) eliminating hunger, thirst, and the like when drunk; (8) nourishing all sense faculties and the four great elements after being drunk. According to this, the water possesses four sense data: purity is the sense sphere of visible form; coolness and softness are the sense sphere of tangibles; sweetness is the sense sphere of tastes; and the remaining three are the functions of the water, lacking the sense datum of smell. The *Tattvasiddhi-śāstra* states: (1) lightness, (2) coolness, and (3) softness are tangibles; (4) deliciousness is taste; (5) purity is visible form; (6) not smelling foul is smell; (7) feeling comfortable after drinking, and (8) being without distress after drinking, are functions of the water. The *Saddharmasmṛtyupasthāna-sūtra* states: (1) having six tastes, namely sweet, bitter, pungent, bland, salty, and sour; (2) pure; (3) fragrant and clean; (4) eliminating thirst; (5) cool; (6) drinking it without satiety; (7) free of dust and defilement; (8) free of harm after drinking. The Pure and Clean Enlightenment Sūtra states: the shallow and deep parts of the water in its ponds rise and fall following one's thoughts. The *Contemplation Sūtra* states: the water flows up and down along the lotus flower trees, and in the sound of the flowing water one hears the voices of the Three Jewels, and the sounds of emptiness, non-self, and the various pāramitās. This is made so through the supernatural power of Amitābha, which belongs to the category of the pure land of physical forms. As for the ultimate land, the *Vimalakīrti-nirdeśa-sūtra* says: "The water of samādhi is still and full."
