"Mahākāśyapa": "Kāśyapa" is translated here as "Light-Drinker". Paramārtha says: His ancestor was a great ṛṣi whose body possessed a radiance capable of drinking in all lights so that none appeared; being of that ṛṣi's lineage, he was therefore named "Light-Drinker". However, Kāśyapa's own body surpassed the color of gold, and whether the designation "Light-Drinker" was inherited from his ancestor is not certain. The Mañjuśrīparipṛcchā translates it as "turtle", which is truly to be feared an error. The Vinaya-vibhāṣā says: Because Kāśyapa had many superior qualities, he was marked with the title "Mahā" ("Great"). He was called "Great" because he was superior in five things: first, because he was born to a wealthy elder; second, because he was able to abandon great wealth and a noble clan to go forth from the household life; third, because he was able to practice the dhūtas with few desires and contentment; fourth, because kings, devas, dragons, and spirits widely acknowledged and could make offerings to him; fifth, because he renounced great worldly offerings to practice having few desires, contentment, and begging for food. Furthermore, the Sūtra on the Original Deeds of Kāśyapa says: Within the city of Rājagṛha there was a very wealthy brāhmaṇa named Nyagrodha (translated here as "Free of Illness"), who had a son named Pippala, who was none other than Mahākāśyapa. Kāśyapa was his clan name, and Pippala was his personal name. Among the Buddha's disciples, he was foremost in dhūta practices; when the Buddha saw him coming, he would share half his seat for him to sit on.
