「摩訶迦旃延」者，真諦云：此翻思勝，古昔有仙，由聞思勝餘人故，是彼仙種故名思勝。舊號肩乘。人云：將應誤，應名扇繩，義將稍切，其父早亡，唯母孤養戀不再嫁，如扇繫繩，以此為號。又釋，迦旃延者是姓，扇繩是字。

"Mahākātyāyana": Paramārtha says: This is translated as "Superior in Reflection". In ancient times there was a ṛṣi who, because his learning and reflection were superior to other people, gave rise to this ṛṣi lineage; hence the name "Superior in Reflection". The old designation was "Shoulder-Vehicle". Some say that this is likely an error and should be "Fan-Cord", whose meaning would be somewhat more apt: his father died early, and his mother alone raised him in solitude, fondly declining to remarry, like a fan tied to its cord; hence this was made his designation. Another explanation is that Kātyāyana was the clan name, and Fan-Cord was his personal name.
