Sengliang states: Above, the three paths were explained; here, the five destinies are explained. Sengzong states: Before attaining the stage of the dharma of heat (ūṣmagata), all retain the possibility of falling back; this is the second person. Just as Sunakkhatta cultivated and attained the four dhyānas, yet gave rise to unwholesomeness and entered the three evil destinies. Baoliang states: Hearing the sūtra gives rise to faith, and therefore this is called 'emerging'. Yet because the five things are not complete, within this he gives rise to the three poisons, falling back into the category of the second person. If he himself knows that these five things are not complete and relies on good spiritual friends to make progress so that his faculty of faith is established, he belongs to the stage of the third person who stays. Zhixiu states: If the five virtues are not complete, one will ultimately sever the buddhadhātu.
