In the former part there are four: first, "Is such a Tathāgata a formation?" examines and determines his words; second, from "If he were a formation..." downward, he concedes [the premise] to show the fault, explaining that if identical to all formations, there would be the fault of production, cessation, and transmigration; third, from "I have heard..." downward, he explains that if there were the fault of production, cessation, and transmigration, he would not be honored and supreme; fourth, from "Therefore..." downward, he concludes by scolding Mañjuśrī. In the first section, "such a Tathāgata" refers back to the words above. That is to say, is such a Tathāgata, the most supreme among devas and humans, a formation? He examines and determines his words; it is a question of doubt and indecision, which is why it says "could it be?"
