In the vinaya there are five phrases: first, adducing the Buddha's past institutions, where the Tathāgata previously taught in the Hīnayāna vinaya the five categories of light and grave offenses as well as thullaccaya offenses, the nature of which are all grave, which are therefore adduced here, and because they equally incur great suffering it is said they are all grave; second, from "Our vinaya..." downward claims the Small as belonging to oneself; third, from "I have long endured..." downward reveals one's own faithful acceptance and resents another's lack of faith; fourth, from "I should..." downward clings to the Small and abandons the Great, calling the Hīnayāna precepts one's own vinaya and the Mahāyāna precepts your vinaya, and therefore now saying, "How could I abandon my own vinaya to follow your vinaya?"; fifth, from "What you possess..." downward relegates the Great to deviance, and therefore says that your vinaya was spoken by Māra.
