Below, in explaining coexistence, there are first verses and then an explanation. In the verse text, the first half of the preceding verse explains that the Buddha himself abides on the summit of the mountain of liberation, which is the meaning of permanence; the lower half shows his seeing ordinary beings, which is coexistence with impermanence. Because the principle of arising and ceasing of all conditioned [dharmas] is uniform, it is spoken of as "level"; this is the dwelling place of ordinary beings, designated as "ground"; because ordinary beings have not entered the principle, it is called a "wilderness"; the Buddha constantly sees ordinary beings in this place. In the latter verse, the first three lines explain that the Buddha daily abides in the terrace-pavilion of wisdom, eradicating sorrow and suffering, which is the meaning of permanence; "and also sees beings' sorrow" is called coexistence with impermanence, for through seeing sentient beings, his mind is ever mindful of sorrow, which is called seeing beings' sorrow.
