Below, the application reveals the Dharma: "Nirvāṇa is likewise" applies to a person smearing a drum with poison; "everywhere among assemblies of various practices" applies to striking it to produce sound among the crowd of people: expounding this scripture for those who engage in practices is why it says "among assemblies of various practices". From "Those who hear the sound..." downward applies to all dying upon hearing it; however, the preceding metaphor directly clarified that those with no intention to hear all die, without discussing those who have an intention to hear or those who do not wish to hear; now this application discusses them completely. First, saying "those who hear have greed and so forth completely extinguished" clarifies that persons of the superior grade on the first ground extinguish delusions upon hearing the scripture, like those in that crowd who have an intention to hear and all die upon hearing it. From "although there are among them those with no intention..." downward clarifies that persons of the superior and middling grades of the lineage extinguish delusions upon hearing the scripture, like those in that crowd who have no intention to hear and all die upon hearing it; although those on that lineage do not perceive the power of the Nirvāṇa Sūtra to extinguish afflictions, the power of the Dharma perfumes and assists them, darkly causing delusions to be extinguished. From "transgressing the four prohibitions" downward clarifies that persons of the inferior grade prior to the lineage extinguish delusions upon hearing the scripture, like those in that crowd who do not wish to hear and also die upon hearing it; these inferior persons obtain benefit as before, saying "also serves as a causal condition of bodhi for them to gradually sever afflictions". From "excepting those who do not [die] prematurely..." downward applies to excepting the one person who does not die prematurely.
