In the second section, first is the metaphor and later the application. In the metaphor there are four phrases: First, the metaphor of the Buddha declaring that śrāvakas will swiftly achieve buddhahood. The "merchant" illustrates the Buddha, who fully possesses the supreme dharma of bodhi in his mind, and therefore it is said that he "has a priceless jewel"; the assembly of śrāvakas is designated as the "market"; bestowing great bodhi upon persons of the śrāvaka [vehicle], declaring that they will quickly achieve it and causing them to practice the causes so as to calculate its fruit, is called "going to the market to sell it." Second, from "Foolish people seeing it" downward is the metaphor of the śrāvakas laughing derisively. Just as worldly people say: "Where could there be a priceless jewel being called out for sale in the market?" what is said is like this: where could there be the fruit of great bodhi bestowed upon persons of the śrāvaka [vehicle], declaring that they will achieve it quickly? Third, from "The owner of the jewel called out" downward is the metaphor of the Tathāgata's praise, saying that what is bestowed upon you is great bodhi. Fourth, from "Hearing it, they laughed again" downward is the metaphor of ordinary beings laughing derisively. In the application, "Śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas are like this" applies to the second phrase; first it directly applies it, and from "Like that" downward it matches it. "In the future..." downward applies to the fourth phrase, clarifying that ordinary beings laugh derisively.
