初中，迦葉先問發起，「今者如來欲為未來作大明故說大涅槃」是領前也，「一切契經說有餘義、無餘義耶」是問後也。下佛答之，諸經所說有所不了名為「有餘」，顯義決了稱曰「無餘」，有餘答上密不畢竟，無餘答上不密畢竟。

In the first part, Kāśyapa asks first to initiate it: "Now the Tathāgata, wishing to make a great illumination for the future, speaks the Mahānirvāṇa" reviews the preceding; "Do all the sūtras speak with residual meaning or without residual meaning?" asks about what follows. Below, the Buddha answers it: that which is spoken in the sūtras that is not fully resolved is called "with residual meaning"; that which reveals the meaning definitively is called "without residual meaning." "With residual meaning" answers the secret and non-definitive above; "without residual meaning" answers the non-secret and definitive above.
