From the point where Kāśyapa first spoke up to this point, it clarifies the half and complete letters. Next, it clarifies understanding, wherein there are three [parts]: first, it directly clarifies understanding; second, from "If there are those who follow" onward, it conversely cites non-understanding to lead people to abandon it; third, from "Therefore you should now leave behind the half" onward, it encourages abandoning non-understanding and causes one to practice correct understanding. In the first part, it first asks what is meant by understanding the meaning of the letters; from "Knowing" onward, it explains knowing. "The Tathāgata appears in the world and eradicates the half letters" is as stated above: "that which gives rise to afflictions" is called the half letters, and therefore the Buddha eradicates them; one should also know that the Buddha reveals the complete letters, though the text is concise and does not elaborate. From "Therefore" onward, it concludes.
