Within [the discussion of] suffering, when it first says, "For this reason, ordinary persons have suffering but no truth," it is because the craving possessed previously by ordinary persons is called only origination, not truth. So too within suffering, they only have its suffering and do not have its truth; this is why they have suffering. Not yet possessing the understanding of wisdom that sees and knows the marks of phenomena, this is why they have no truth. If they do not even have truth, how could they see reality? When it says, "Śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas have suffering and have truth, but have no reality," this is because these persons presently possess the residual fruit of fragmentary [samsāra] and will in the future have the actual fruit of transformed saṃsāra; hence it says they have suffering. Knowing that the causes and conditions of suffering are nominally existent and devoid of self-nature is called having the truth of suffering; but not having exhausted the fundamental basis of suffering, they therefore have no reality. When it says, "All bodhisattvas understand suffering to be without suffering, and therefore have no suffering but have reality," bodhisattvas, not having ended transformed saṃsāra, should also have suffering; but because they realize reality and understand suffering to be without suffering, it is passed over and not discussed. Knowing the real nature of suffering is called understanding suffering; not seeing the marks of suffering, it is said that they have no suffering. The conclusion below beginning with "Therefore" [means that] truly because these persons understand suffering to be without suffering, they therefore have no suffering. Since they know the marks of phenomena and also know the reality of suffering, it is called the noble truth. Origination is also like this.
