The former has four parts: first, initially seeing him with astonishment; second, from "then together" downward, praising what he did; third, from "at that time, among the assembly there was a deva" downward, assessing what he did; fourth, from "such a matter is indeed hard to believe" downward, clarifying the necessity of testing. The first two can be understood. In the third section, three persons assess him: the first devaputra says he seeks Śakra's position; the second, an immortal deva, states that he does not seek it; the third, Śakra, follows their words to confirm and praise. In the second person, he first designates the person, and below clarifies what he says: first urging not to worry, next adducing the austerities of non-Buddhists to compare them, and finally clarifying the purpose of the bodhisattva's austerities. "There are great beings in the world who, for the sake of sentient beings..." and so forth generally adduces what all bodhisattvas do; from "according to my understanding" downward, he assimilates this [practitioner] to them. In Śakra's praise, "according to your words" recaps what was previously stated; from "this person" downward, three clauses confirm it: first, clarifying that this person can gather sentient beings through wholesome dharmas; second, from "there is a buddha-tree" downward, clarifying that he can eliminate the afflictions of sentient beings; third, from "this person will in the future become a Sugata" downward, clarifying that he can benefit oneself.
