In the explanation, it first questions, and below explains in response. It clarifies that hatred has two kinds: first, coarse; second, subtle. Cultivating benevolence eliminates the coarse, while cultivating compassion treats the subtle; hence four can be established. Within this there are six rounds: In the first round, it first cites the two kinds of hatred, next lists their two names, and then distinguishes their remedies. Hatred that takes life is coarse, heavy, and easily abandoned, so benevolence can eliminate it; anger that whips and lashes is light, subtle, and difficult to relinquish, so only cultivating compassion can treat it. From "for this reason" downward concludes.
