In the first [division], "The great physician named Jīvaka" names and introduces the person who advises. "Jīvaka" is a western language; here it means "Long Life." On the day he was born, he was abandoned at the head of a lane and yet did not die; hence he was called "Long Life." This person was skilled in medicine, hence he was called "great physician." "He went to the king's place and said, 'Are you well?'" tests and examines the king's mind: if he had no shame, he would be at peace; having shame, he would not be at peace. Being not at peace, he could be saved, hence [Jīvaka] needed to test and ask him. To accomplish the king of the world's practice of curing illness, the physician therefore questioned him.
