Among the first four verses, the first two explain that the Buddha cuts off the affliction-hindrance and therefore attains peaceful sleep. Within these, the former verse explains cutting off afflictions, and the latter verse explains that due to cutting off afflictions, he realizes Mahāparinirvāṇa. "If one attains nirvāṇa" is his personal virtue; "proclaiming the profound meaning" explains his virtue of benefiting others; "he is called a brāhmaṇa" summarizes in praise: purifying oneself and purifying others, he therefore attains being called a true brāhmaṇa. The third verse [explains] being peaceful because of leaving behind karma: staying far away from the three邪 [evils], with purity of body, speech, and mind. The fourth verse [explains] being peaceful because of removing suffering: "Body and mind free from distress" directly explains leaving suffering; "peacefully abiding in stillness..." and so forth explain his attainment of bliss.
