In the first [point], there are five lines: first, taking occasion of the king's previous words, he urges the king to have shame and remorse; second, from "The Buddhas, the World-Honoured Ones, constantly say" onward, he cites the Buddha's past words to explain that shame and remorse can save sentient beings, so that he is not incurable, first presenting [the topic] and then enumerating it; third, from "One who has shame does not create [evil] oneself" onward, he distinguishes the characteristics of shame and remorse, distinguishing them in three turns; fourth, from "Those without shame and remorse" onward, he presents the disadvantages to reveal the advantages; fifth, "Splendid" commends the king, and from "not grave" onward, it concludes by praising King Ajātaśatru for being able to possess shame and remorse.
