In the first [pair], he first explains that King Ajātaśatru does not go, and his father the king subsequently urges him. Within the king not going, he first praises the Tathāgata and the Buddha's assembly as pure and exalted; from "I now" onward, he is ashamed of himself and will not go. In the former [part], there are five lines: first, explaining that the Tathāgata and the Buddha's assembly are both well-tamed—this is taming the mind; second, that the Buddha and the assembly are both pure—this is purifying the body; third, that the Buddha and the assembly are both tranquil—this is stilling the speech, these [three] praising their possession of good; fourth, explaining that they are free from greed—greed and attachment are severed; fifth, explaining that they are free from affliction—anger and delusion are extinguished, these [two] explaining their freedom from evil. In the latter [part], first he reflects that his own sin is grave and dares not see the Buddha; from "Even if I were to go" onward, he fears that going would be of no avail; from "Although you urge me" onward, he concludes that he will not go.
