From here below is the fourth part: explaining the name and meaning of the light. Jīvaka first explains that this is the Tathāgata's Moon-Love Radiance. Below, he further explains it, first questioning and then answering, in six clauses: the first five explain "moon," and the last one explains "love." Among the first five, the first three explain it in terms of generating goodness: the first is opening and developing the initial mind, like the moon; the second is advancing and generating the intention for practice, like the moon; the last is ultimately bringing it to accomplishment, like the moon; each first sets up an analogy and then applies it, as can be known. The latter two explain it in terms of destroying evil: the former clause takes the gradual waning of the moonlight as an analogy for this samādhi gradually extinguishing afflictions; the latter clause takes the moon's ability to eliminate heat as an analogy for this samādhi eliminating afflictions; each likewise first sets up an analogy and then reveals the Dharma. The explanation of "love" is clear.
