初中有二：一世王受勸，擇時許往。「若使如來審如是者」，所謂審為闡提說法。二耆婆催勸，勸有四句：一明佛法不擇時日；二時王病重，不應選時，先舉世事、後約以勸；三明詣佛得益齊等；四結勸令往。

In the first there are two parts: first, King Ajātaśatru accepts the urging, and chooses an auspicious time to agree to go: "If the Tathāgata is truly like this"—that is, truly preaches the Dharma for an icchantika. Second, Jīvaka presses and urges him, his urging having four phrases: first, explaining that the Buddhadharma does not select times or days; second, that the king's illness is grave at this time and he should not select a time, first adducing worldly matters and afterward applying them to urge him; third, explaining that approaching the Buddha brings equal benefit; fourth, concluding by urging him to go.
