Third, listing the names of these virtues: although the sūtra does not distinguish them, here they may be designated tentatively in accord with their meaning: First, the virtue of entering into wisdom, in which hearing, reflection, cultivation, and realization successively and equally contemplate and enter. Second, the virtue of giving rise to supernormal powers, skillfully raising the five supernormal powers with sovereign, wondrous functioning. Third, the virtue of the great immeasurable [minds], fulfilling and perfecting great loving-kindness unconditioned by objects. Fourth, the virtue of accomplishing the benefit of the ten matters, difficult to uproot from their roots and ultimately free of the two extremes. Fifth, the virtue of the retribution-fruit of the five matters, extending from the completeness of the faculties up to the fifth, attaining the wisdom of past lives. Sixth, the virtue of mental sovereignty, which refers to the vajra-samādhi. Seventh, the virtue of cultivating antidotes, which refers to drawing close to good spiritual friends and practicing hearing, reflection, and cultivation. Eighth, the virtue of perfecting antidotes, which refers to leaving behind the five matters up to the two kinds of liberation of wisdom and mind. Ninth, the virtue of skillfully practicing the correct path, which refers to faithful mind, upholding the precepts, drawing close to friends, completeness, and much learning. Tenth, the virtue of accomplishing the correct path, which refers to the thirty-seven factors [of awakening]. Among these ten, the first six are virtues of one's own stage, while the latter four are superior advances. This is the third gate.
