In the fourth gate, "not hearing this sūtra, their minds are full of doubts" generally raises what is to be severed. Next, it reveals them individually; distinguishing by phrase there are sixteen, which grouped together make nine. First, four phrases combine as the first: doubts regarding the marks of dharmas of saṃsāra and nirvāṇa. Next, two phrases combine as the second: doubts regarding sentient beings—"whether there is a life principle or no life principle" doubts the existence or non-existence of the life faculty of sentient beings; "whether there is birth or no birth" doubts the existence or non-existence of those nominal persons. "Whether complete or incomplete" is the third gate: doubts regarding the three vehicles; the Mahāyāna is complete, and the Hīnayāna is incomplete. "Whether other or past" is the fourth gate: doubts regarding the three periods of time; "other periods" refers to the future, doubting whether in the future there is retribution or no retribution; [and it refers to] doubting whether in the past there were causes or no causes. "Whether existing or non-existing" is the fifth gate: doubts regarding existence and non-existence; existence and non-existence are comprehensively combined, and cannot be fully discussed. From "whether suffering" on down there are four phrases combining as the sixth: doubts regarding the four noble truths. "Whether Dharma or non-Dharma" is the seventh gate: doubts regarding the heterodox and orthodox. "Whether wholesome or unwholesome" is the eighth gate: doubts regarding actions and karmic deeds. "Whether empty or non-empty" is the ninth gate: doubts regarding the two truths. Below, it clarifies that these doubts are all severed upon hearing the sūtra.
