The broad explanation of the two vehicles' lack is now completed; next, it reconciles and synthesizes them: since the present teaching differs from the past, they must be reconciled. Kāśyapa first asks: "If śrāvakas and the like entirely lack them" restates the Buddha's present words; from "How is it" onward, he queries the past by means of the present: although citing Śāriputra and Mahāmaudgalyāyana, he takes Koṭṭhita [as the main point]; from "If they lack them" onward, he repeatedly concludes his query. Below, the Buddha reconciles them for him, with three distinct textual sections: first, contrasting the superior to reveal the inferior, clarifying that the four unobstructed knowledges of the two vehicles are inferior to those of bodhisattvas, which is why he now says they lack them; second, from "For ordinary persons, I" onward, contrasting the inferior to reveal the superior: because they "surpass ordinary persons," he previously said they possess them; third, from "A śrāvaka may attain one" onward, he explains and clarifies by means of principle.
