Concerning the first five: first, it is empty and devoid of people: "Contemplating the internal six sense-bases as empty and having nothing, just like a deserted village" applies to entering a single village. From "Like that terrified person..." downward applies to entering the village, peering into the houses, and not seeing people and so forth; it first cites the previous parable, and below applies it to reveal the Dharma. "A bodhisattva in this way" applies to the terrified person above; "attentively contemplates the six sense-bases as empty and having nothing" applies to looking into the houses and seeing no people at all; "does not see the reality of sentient beings or of a single thing" applies to grasping earthenware vessels and finding them all empty and without things; from "therefore" downward concludes. Second, it explains what ordinary persons are deluded by. Third, the bodhisattva only then realizes it. Fourth, it is the dwelling place of afflictions, which contains three clauses: 1. it explains that afflictions abide comfortably within it; 2. it explains that afflictions abide there without fear; 3. it explains that afflictions share the same support. Fifth, it explains that being empty and without things, it gives rise to the conception of existence in people.
