Below is the application of the parable of the river. First it applies that river, and afterwards it applies seeking to cross. In the former, it first states, "The river is afflictions," briefly applying the simile by raising it. Below, it expands upon the application, wherein there are twelve points: the first five are like the river; the next three surpass the river. Among them, the first explains that it destroys body and mind as well as all good dharmas; the second, that it can drift and drown humans and devas of the three realms; the third, that only the bodhisattva's six practices can cross it, whereas worldly rivers are not like this; the next two are like the river; the last two surpass the river, wherein the first explains that when an icchantika drowns in it, others cannot rescue them, and the second explains that the seven factors of awakening of the two vehicles cannot dry it up. A [worldly] river is not like this, and therefore it is said to surpass it.
