From "Like a fearful person..." downward applies to seeking to cross as mentioned above. The text distinctly has three parts: 1. it applies "taking grass to make a raft" out of fear; it first cites the previous parable, and the subsequent application can be understood; 2. from "relying on and riding this..." downward leaps forward to apply pushing the raft into the water, leaning upon it, and departing; 3. from "one who cultivates nirvāṇa reflects thus..." downward turns back to apply further reflecting, "If I stay here, I will be harmed by the snakes and so forth; better to drown in the water and die, never to be harmed by those snakes and thieves." "Because of enduring, not giving rise to outflows" concludes by explaining that the bodhisattva can sever the outflows of thoughts. From "If even a bodhisattva..." downward raises the cause to illustrate the result, explaining that the Buddha is free of outflows.
