7.191

前就涅槃明不聞聞，次就如來佛性等法明不聞聞，自下第三於前文中有未解者問答重顯。顯前何義？前就涅槃不聞聞中明布施等是涅槃因，六波羅蜜大涅槃因。德王前者牒問如來，如來於彼但為解釋布施等行是波羅蜜、非波羅蜜，未為解釋涅槃大小，故今此中問答顯之。德王先問「如佛先說修大涅槃不聞聞中有涅槃、大涅槃」領佛前言，「云何涅槃？云何大涅槃？」請佛解釋。

Previously, with respect to nirvāṇa, it explained hearing the unheard; next, with respect to dharmas such as the Tathāgata and buddha-nature, it explained hearing the unheard. From here downward, the third part re-illuminates through question and answer that which was not understood in the preceding text. What meaning from before does it illuminate? Previously, within hearing the unheard regarding nirvāṇa, it explained that giving and so forth are the causes of nirvāṇa, and the six pāramitās are the causes of great nirvāṇa. Virtue King previously cited this to ask the Tathāgata, but the Tathāgata there only explained for him that practices such as giving are pāramitās or non-pāramitās, and did not yet explain for him the greatness or smallness of nirvāṇa; therefore, in this passage, questions and answers illuminate it. Virtue King first asks, "As the Buddha previously said, within hearing the unheard in cultivating great nirvāṇa, there is nirvāṇa and great nirvāṇa," expressing understanding of the Buddha's previous words; "What is nirvāṇa? What is great nirvāṇa?" requests the Buddha to explain.
