7.284

下廣釋之，「煩惱餘報」就凡夫說，「餘業」就彼小乘人中學人宣說，「餘有」就彼小乘人中無學人說，蓋隱顯耳。煩惱餘中，先問次辯。煩惱無量，今且就其貪、瞋、癡、慢四使說之，以此四使緣事而起受惡果故。一一之中皆初習起，次墮三塗，後生人中受其餘報，皆有在家、出家之別。下明菩薩對治修斷。

Below, it explains them at length. "Residual retribution of defilements" is stated with respect to ordinary beings. "Residual karma" is stated with respect to those in training among the people of the Hīnayāna. "Residual existence" is stated with respect to those beyond training among the people of the Hīnayāna; this is simply a matter of the implicit and the explicit. Concerning the residue of defilements, first is a question and next the explanation. Defilements are limitless, but here they are temporarily explained in terms of the four underlying afflictions of greed, anger, ignorance, and arrogance, because these four afflictions arise in connection with events and result in bad retribution. In each one, there is first the habitual arising, next falling into the three wretched realms, and later being born among humans to receive its residual retribution; each possesses the distinction of household life and homeless life. Below, it explains the bodhisattva's cultivation of antidotes to sever them.
