Next it clarifies listening to the Dharma, in which there are three points: First, universally raising the Mahāyāna and Hīnayāna, meaning that being able to listen to and receive the twelve divisions of sūtras is called listening to the Dharma. Second, selecting the Mahāyāna and excluding the Hīnayāna: listening to the vaipulya sūtras is called listening to the Dharma. Third, within the Mahāyāna, selecting the superior and excluding the inferior: listening to the Nirvāṇa Sūtra is called listening to the Dharma. Within this, it first says, 'One who truly listens to the Dharma listens to the Mahānirvāṇa,' universally indicating it. From 'Within the Mahānirvāṇa, hearing the buddha-nature...' onward, it particularly reveals what is heard. What is heard has six phrases in three pairs: first, hearing the cause of the buddha-nature when concealed; second, hearing the result of the Tathāgata being ultimately unperishing when revealed—these two form one pair. Third, hearing the practice of the eightfold path that is able to realize; fourth, hearing the principle of the eleven emptinesses that is realized—these two form one pair. Fifth, hearing that giving rise to the aspiration attains great bodhi; sixth, hearing that giving rise to the aspiration attains great nirvāṇa—these two form one pair.
