前明友中有八復次，初一復次能調物心，中六復次巧為善益，後一復次內心平等。初中，「第一善知識者謂佛菩薩」簡勝去劣，簡去聲聞、辟支佛等。「何以」下釋，初先徵問，「常以三種善調伏故」對問略解。下別顯之，先問，次列，「以是」下結。

In the preceding clarification of the friend there are eight repetitions: the first repetition is being able to tame the minds of beings; the middle six repetitions are skillfully bringing about beneficial goodness; the latter repetition is the inner mind being impartial. In the first, 'The foremost good spiritual friends are buddhas and bodhisattvas' selects the superior and excludes the inferior, excluding śrāvakas, pratyekabuddhas, and the like. From 'Why is this?' onward is the explanation: first it investigates and asks; 'Because they constantly tame well through three kinds...' briefly explains in response to the question. Below it reveals them particularly, first asking, next listing, and from 'For this reason...' onward concluding.
