Within the first [part] there are again three: first, directly explaining "not hearing what is heard" in terms of nirvāṇa; second, from "King of Virtue said [to the Buddha]" downward, questioning and answering to discuss it again; third, from "King of Virtue said to the Buddha: Why does giving not obtain the name of pāramitā?" downward, questioning and answering to explain again points among the second reiteration of meaning that are difficult to understand. Within the first, he first asks, and next responds and explains it. He first explains that "not hearing" is called great nirvāṇa, showing the essence of "not hearing"; from "for what reason?" downward explains the meaning of "not hearing," first querying and then explaining. "Not conditioned" means that unlike saṃsāra, where conditioned dharmas can be discussed in speech, it therefore cannot be heard. "Not sound" means that because it is unlike the nature of expressive sounds, it cannot be heard. "Inexpressible" means that because it is unlike words and names that can be spoken, it cannot be heard. Below, he explains the meaning of "hearing," first querying and then explaining; from "for this [reason]" downward concludes it.
