9.137

「善星雖復讀誦」已下，却答第二，明雖禪誦而不可救。先彰其過，下與迦葉身往驗試。前中四句：一明善星雖復讀誦心不解義、二明善星得禪還失、三起惡邪謗無佛答、四「我爾時」下佛為說法無心信受。身驗可知。

From "Although Sunakkhatta recited and chanted" onward, he turns back to answer the second [phrase], clarifying that although he practiced dhyāna and recited, he could not be saved. First his faults are revealed, and below, [the Buddha] goes in person with Kāśyapa to verify and test them. In the former part, there are four phrases: first, it clarifies that although Sunakkhatta recited and chanted, his mind did not understand the meaning; second, it clarifies that Sunakkhatta attained dhyāna but lost it again; third, he gave rise to evil and heterodox views, slandering that there was no Buddha; fourth, from "At that time, for him..." onward, when the Buddha preached the Dharma for him, he had no mind to believe and accept it. The personal verification can be understood.
