Sixth, granting permission. The Buddha told Kauṇḍinya to permit his going forth, because Kauṇḍinya was the one given the final entrustment: "Since you are the senior elder, you must oversee the affairs of the Saṅgha." Regarding his attaining the fruit of arhatship: if one relies on Kāishàn, these are all manifested traces; if one relies on Zhuāngyán, he truly attained arhatship. Through the power of the Buddha's spiritual penetrations and the efficacy of his preaching of the Dharma, this person was immediately caused to pass from ordinary to sage, which is extraordinarily remarkable. However, the previous text already stated that he had attained right view, and here it states again that only after going forth did he attain arhatship; therefore we know that with the previous statement of right view, its depth is difficult to fathom—it could be that he had just attained the first fruit, or it could be that it was merely an expedience, and therefore only now did he attain the fruit of arhatship. Personally, I would say: turning away from heterodoxy and entering the correct is itself right view; why need one dispute the depth of the stage attained?
