The past Buddhas and bodhisattvas, in order to guide these deluded sentiments, provisionally spoke of nirvāṇa, emptily and provisionally establishing names as skillful means for emerging [from defilement]. Names do not capture things, and things do not correspond to names. Since names and things are like this, the myriad dharmas are established. Therefore, saṃsāra and nirvāṇa fundamentally lack two characteristics; it is only to transform these false delusions—just like ferrying across empty space—that in reality no sentient beings attain extinction. Comprehending thus is called attaining nirvāṇa, yet in reality there is no nirvāṇa to be attained.
