Fourth, Master Zhixiu also said it cannot be translated. That master’s preface says: “Nirvāṇa is the general name for the consummate, ultimate, supreme state. Yet following the traces one sees the name, and seeing the name one knows the fundamental. The rising of name and trace originated in India, and our Great Liang should also have an appellation. But the recent spread of the Way, having departed from the Western Regions in unfathomability, is translated in this country with the letter ‘I’; therefore former worthies and later sages all followed the old text, transmitting without inventing, and thus titled the path of the sūtra.”
