第三講文，為二：初略辨下人化益眾生、後廣辨下人化益眾生。謂下品人自有優劣故，故有此略廣。初中三分：一證信傳經分、二問答廣說分、三聞說奉行分。一云此經亦有發起序，謂「爾時阿難至汝還就坐」為發起序。此解不然，無有餘經對問佛答文而名為發起故。初中有五句，若三句同別。

Third, lecturing on the text, which has two parts: first, briefly distinguishing the transformation and benefit of sentient beings by the lower person; second, extensively distinguishing the transformation and benefit of sentient beings by the lower person. That is, because persons of the lower grade naturally have superior and inferior qualities, there is this brevity and breadth. In the first part there are three divisions: first, the division certifying faith and transmitting the sūtra; second, the division of questions, answers, and extensive explanation; third, the division of hearing the explanation and practicing accordingly. One view says that this sūtra also has an introductory prologue, saying that from 'At that time Ānanda' to 'You return to your seat' is the introductory prologue. This explanation is not correct, because there is no other sūtra where a passage of dialogue between a questioner and the Buddha's answer is called an introductory prologue. In the first part there are five phrases, or three shared and distinct phrases.
