經之初句「聞如是」者,前經中先標所聞法故,先言如是、後曰我聞。今此經意,多聞總領如來所說法為表,故先聞、後如是。或可錯語非一故,義亦無失。後句中云「五百人」者,如《中阿含經》云「佛告舍利子:『此五百比丘,九十比丘得三明達,九十比丘得俱解脫,餘比丘得慧解脫』」也。
Regarding the opening phrase of the sūtra, "Thus have I heard" (聞如是): because in earlier sūtras the Dharma that was heard was first indicated, it previously said "Thus" (如是) first and "have I heard" (我聞) later. Here in this sūtra, the intention is to signify having heard much and comprehensively retaining the Dharma spoken by the Tathāgata; therefore, "heard" comes first and "thus" comes later. Alternatively, because translational phrasing varies, there is also no loss in meaning. Regarding "five hundred people" in the subsequent phrase, it is as the *Madhyama Āgama* states: "The Buddha addressed Śāriputra: 'Among these five hundred monks, ninety monks attained the three clarities and penetrations, ninety monks attained both liberations, and the remaining monks attained liberation through wisdom.'"
