From the sūtra's words 'At that time the Demon King' onward, this is the third [section], answering about the assemblies of disciples. Here there are two parts: first, the assemblies of the three gatherings; second, the assembly of the ten contemplations. Within the first, there are two parts: first, the assemblies to whom he preached the Dharma; second, concluding with their names and clans. Within the first of these, there are two parts: first, correctly explaining the assembly of the first gathering; second, taking the occasion to answer the question about supernatural transformations. The first also has two parts: first, preaching the Dharma; second, resolving doubts. The first contains six groups: first, the Demon King's assembly; second, the elders' assembly; third, the king's assembly; fourth, the ministers' assembly; fifth, the Buddha's mother's assembly; sixth, the kṣatriyas' assembly. This is the first. Regarding the 'Demon King': this is the sixth heaven of the desire realm. Regarding the 'discourse on rebirth in heaven': one interpretation says it is the ten virtuous actions. Another interpretation says it is the aforementioned generosity and precepts, collectively named the discourse on rebirth in heaven. Regarding 'producing treasures as wondrous': for those who cultivate the contemplation of the impurity of the five desires, being born into the higher realms is considered a treasure; this demonstrates the exposition of mundane dharmas. From 'At that time Maitreya' onward, the text's meaning demonstrates the exposition of supramundane dharmas. 'Suffering' is the truth of suffering; 'accumulation' is the truth of the origin [of suffering]; 'cessation' is the truth of cessation; 'path' is the truth of the path. Regarding 'dust and defilement': the Yogācārabhūmi, fascicle eighty-six, says: 'The entanglements of afflictions to be abandoned by vision are dust; the latencies of those afflictions are defilement.' The 'purity of the Dharma eye' is the patience and knowledge concerning the four truths.
