經曰「是時蠰佉」以下，第三國王眾。言初中後善者，彰其教，謂始聽聞時生歡心故為初善，修行時無難艱故為中善，終至究竟果故為後善也。義理深邃者，彰所詮義。邃者，以無相法與合，故名邃也。立太子者，太子立為王紹。賜剃頭珍寶者，剃頭師及珍寶賜於太子，又以珍寶與梵志。是故《阿含經》云「賜剃頭師寶，復以雜寶與諸梵志」也。時八萬四千以下，意顯王出家得果也。

From the sūtra's words 'At that time Śaṅkha' onward, this is the third, the king's assembly. Regarding 'good in the beginning, middle, and end': this clarifies his teaching; that is, producing a joyful mind upon first hearing it is good in the beginning; lacking difficulty or hardship during practice is good in the middle; and finally reaching the ultimate fruition is good in the end. Regarding 'profound and deep in meaning and principle': this clarifies the signified meaning. 'Deep' means being united with the unconditioned, signless Dharma; hence it is called 'deep'. Regarding 'establishing the crown prince': the crown prince was established as the royal successor. Regarding 'bestowing the precious items of shaving': the hair-shaving barber and precious treasures were bestowed upon the crown prince, and he also gave precious treasures to the brahmacārins. Therefore the Āgama says: 'He bestowed treasures upon the hair-shaving barber, and furthermore gave assorted treasures to the various brahmacārins.' From 'At that time eighty-four thousand' onward, the intent is to show the king going forth and attaining the fruit.
