什曰：據佛所在方也。毘，言稻土之所宜也。耶離，言廣嚴，其地平廣莊嚴。肇曰：毘耶離，國土名也，秦言廣嚴。其土平廣嚴事，因以為名也。

[Kumāra]jīva says: Grounding where the Buddha was located. 'Vai' speaks of the suitability of the land for rice; 'śālī' speaks of vast and adorned, its land being flat, vast, and adorned.
[Seng]zhao says: Vaiśālī is the name of a country, in the language of Qin called Vast and Adorned. Its land is flat, vast, and adorned; it is named accordingly.
