[Seng]zhao says: How could the reason a land is pure be accomplished through craft and adornment? Its purification must depend on practice, hence they requested an explanation of practice. All practice must be in the stage of learning; therefore this question of the bodhisattvas was indeed the subtle intent of the Tathāgata's manifestation of the canopy and the original intention behind Ratnakūṭa's coming together with them. Another version reads, 'the practice of purifying the buddha-land'. [Kumāra]jīva says: The Sanskrit text says 'the marks of purification'. Below it says that sentient beings are the buddha-land; this is because its marks appear as omens in the present, so that the events respond in the future.
