[Seng]zhao says: The purity or defilement of a land is certainly not something the two vehicles can reach. The Tathāgata, wishing to clarify that the buddha-land is constantly pure and that beauty and ugliness arise from those [beings], used his spiritual power to arouse Śāriputra's doubtful thought so as to initiate the discourse; hence it says "receiving". / [Dao]sheng says: Having heard about the purity of concrete phenomena, [Śāriputra] became attached to the phenomena, yet was still unaware of defilement's absence, thinking that rocks and sand conflicted with practice; hence [the Buddha] manifested this difficulty to resolve it. Śāriputra truly had nothing he did not penetrate, yet residing in an inadequate stage, he could ostensibly act as one who was not enlightened, thus conceiving this thought to express the doubts of the assembly. Arising in response to the capacity [of beings], it fundamentally came from the Buddha's wisdom. Now that he showed it as not his own [fault], how could it be in vain?
