8.128

[Kumāra]jīva says: Being able to be sovereign and unobstructed regarding former dharmas, where there is no obstruction, burdened thoughts should be abandoned. It is also said that the function of liberation is to feel revulsion for the body and abandon attachments; yet now thinking of food, how deep is the contradiction with its principle! [Seng]zhao says: The eight liberations taught by the Buddha are fine delicacies devoid of desire, the supreme sustenance that nourishes the dharmakāya. The good sir personally received them, supposedly having no further desires. Yet now, while mixing thoughts of food, he wishes to listen to the Dharma—how could this be the disposition of coming to seek without worldly notions? [Dao]sheng says: The eight liberations take the contemplation of impurity as their beginning, and food is an impure thing. Since he takes embodiment of the eight as his mindset, how could he still harbor the desire to eat? Moreover, in the Dharma there is no food to be desired; how could one listen to it with the desire to eat?
