[Seng]zhao says: The harm of the five heinous deeds and the benefit of making offerings, viewed from the grand perspective, are entirely equal, without perception of difference. If one can fall through the five heinous deeds, through making offerings one also falls. [Dao]sheng says: Retribution and response fit together like the two halves of a tally; if one gives to a person of false views, it brings the retribution of false views and one falls into the three evil destinies. Retribution in accordance with false views means there is no field of merit. Since there is no field of merit, how could any name be applied? In conforming [to the real], when one ultimately obtains right view, one understands that there is no field of merit to be named, and attains escape from the three evil destinies without viewing this as different from falling.
