The two clauses "Deep faith is firm and solid" are the second part, concluding the internal dharmas of fearlessness. Faith is of two kinds: first, [faith from] hearing; second, [faith from] realization. When differentiated according to the four teachings, each has its stages, but here we speak only in terms of the Perfect [Teaching]. If one considers the disciples of the five grades, they have purely faith from hearing, believing in the principle of the inconceivable three virtues; at [the stage of] purification of the six sense faculties, they have both hearing and an attainment resembling realization; from the first dwelling stage upward, they have both hearing and partial realization; on the buddha ground, there is only realization. Now, since these bodhisattvas already abide in high stages, their two kinds of faith are perfect and profound, and so it says "deep faith." As for "firm and solid," the two kinds of faith cannot be destroyed by the internal or the external. "Just like vajra" illustrates and reveals this deep faith. Vajra has two meanings: first, its sharpness penetrates to the original limit—internally corresponding to the two faiths, where the functions of concentration and wisdom exhaust the actual limit of reality; second, its substance is solid and cannot be broken by the myriad things—analogous to the two faiths, which cannot be damaged by afflictions or birth-and-death.
