From "The jewel of the Dharma universally illuminates" downward is the second major section, directly clarifying transforming others, divided into three: first, clarifying transforming others through emitting light and preaching the Dharma; second, clarifying transforming others through directly preaching the Dharma; third, clarifying the gate of progressive cultivation for transforming others. The first has two parts: first, directly clarifying emitting light and preaching the Dharma; second, clarifying its explanatory confirmation. The first again has three parts: first, emitting light; second, preaching the Dharma; third, an explanatory praise. First, "emitting light" clarifies that the bodhisattvas' compassion and wisdom take the principle of the three truths as object, generating the jewel of wholesome dharmas to transform all who have the conditions. "Universally illuminates": they enter the samādhi of emitting light and the samādhi of universal light, and are thus able to illuminate universally. If ordinary beings should be illuminated by the light of worldly goodness, or if they are to be saved by supramundane goodness or supramundane supreme-of-supreme goodness, the bodhisattvas, in accordance with what is appropriate, emit the light of wholesome dharmas with whichever samādhi is fitting, causing each to attain deliverance. Therefore, the Avataṃsaka, the Viśeṣacintā-[brahma-paripṛcchā], and the Dàpǐn all state: "The Buddha has a light called 'Free from Stinginess'; if he emits this light to shine upon stingy sentient beings, they are immediately able to practice generosity, and so on; in such various ways he brings benefit, causing them to attain the Path." If one light dispels stinginess and another light dispels anger, this is the intent of the Separate Teaching and is not termed "universally illuminating." If one emits the light of the two truths, that is also not termed "universal." Now, these bodhisattvas emit merely a single light that contains all lights and shines upon all places, so that sentient beings of the ten realms each attain benefit and enter the Path according to their capacity; hence it is called "universally illuminating."
