Fourth, as for explaining the land of tranquil light: the principle of the suchness dharma-realm illuminated by the ultimate wisdom of marvelous enlightenment is designated as a land. But the dharma-nature of the Mahāyāna is precisely the true tranquil nature of wisdom, not like the biased-true principle of the two vehicles. Hence the Nirvāṇa [Sūtra] states, "The emptiness of the primary meaning is named wisdom," and this sūtra states, "If one knows that the nature of ignorance is itself illumination." All such cases convey the meaning of eternal tranquil light. Because it is the dwelling place of inconceivable ultimate wisdom, it is called "tranquil light"; it is also called the "dharma-nature land." Yet true suchness and buddha-nature are neither body nor land, yet are spoken of as body and land; apart from the body there is no land, and apart from the land there is no body. The naming of a land is one dharma with two meanings. Therefore the Jingang bore lun states: "Wisdom gathers through consciousness alone; / Acquiring a pure land in this manner, / It is not physical, but the primary essence; / It is not an adornment, but the adornment."
