"Once received, there is no regress, ever tranquil": this is initial vision of the noble truths, never regressing or losing [it]. If worldly wisdom severs fetters, they arise again upon meeting conditions. Now, uncontaminated wisdom severs all conceptual proliferations so that they never arise at all; hence it is said to be 'ever tranquil'. The Great Sūtra says: 'Worldly physicians treat illnesses; once cured, they arise again. What the Tathāgata treats never flares up at all.' Hence it is said to be ever tranquil. Examining the Vibhāṣā, those who see existence and attain the Way still regress from the knowledge of exhaustion, regressing to the first fruit. Dharmagupta sees emptiness and attains the Way, consistently without regress. Although the teachings differ, in terms of non-retrogression on the path of vision their principle has no difference. The meaning of the present verse directly praises non-retrogression on the path of vision for ordinary persons.
